What is Ledger.com/start®?
The Starting® Portal for Your® Device®
Ledger.com/start® is your designated launchpad to begin setup, activation, and secure configuration of a Ledger hardware device. The Starting® Up® Your® Device® process ensures that every device is initialized with uncompromised safety, verified firmware, and personalized configuration. Whether you are a first-time user or upgrading, this guide steers you step by step to bring your Ledger device to life.
Step‑by‑Step Setup Guide
Unboxing and First Connection
When you unpack your Ledger hardware, ensure all seals are intact. Connect via USB‑C or USB‑A to your computer. Open a browser and visit Ledger.com/start®. The Device® should power on and display the Ledger logo. If you see anything else, do not proceed until you verify authenticity.
Installing Ledger Live and Firmware
Download and Install the Ledger Live App
Ledger Live is the official companion software to manage apps, assets, and firmware. From the portal, click “Download Ledger Live” and follow on‑screen instructions. Ledger Live is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, as well as iOS and Android for companion devices.
Firmware Update via Starting® Interface
After installing Ledger Live, the interface will detect whether your device’s firmware is outdated. If so, it will prompt an update. Allow the firmware to update — this is critical to security. Do not unplug or turn off the device during the update. Once complete, confirm the version on your device matches the version shown in Ledger Live.
Creating Your Recovery Phrase®
The Starting® Up® Your® Device® sequence includes generating a recovery phrase (usually 24 words). Write it down physically — never digitally. Store it securely. Your recovery phrase is the only backup of your private keys, so guard it carefully.
Security and Best Practices
PIN Setup and Device Protection
Choose a strong PIN code when prompted. Use digits only, but avoid sequential or repeated numbers. The PIN protects access to your Device®. If you enter the wrong PIN too many times, the device will reset — so keep your recovery phrase safe.
Verifying Authenticity
Ledger devices include a tamper‑evident security seal. When you start via **Ledger.com/start®**, you can verify that the code shown on screen matches what Ledger Live expects. Do not proceed if firmware appears unsigned or if you see suspicious warnings. Authenticity checks are built into the Starting® process.
Never Share Your Recovery Phrase®
Ledger will never ask for your recovery phrase. Do not type it into websites, apps, or send it over email or chat. Keeping this phrase private is essential to protect your assets.
Keeping Software Updated
Periodically open Ledger Live and check for software and app updates. Use the Starting® Up® Your® Device® flow whenever you suspect irregularities. Running outdated firmware or apps can leave vulnerabilities. Stay current.
